Returning to the source
The room is full of people, stretching out into the shadows. Everyone has an argument, opinions on a dozen issues that all overlap and interweave: who is allowed in; what marriage means; what the Bible says about this or that; whether Biblical authority is normative in all times and places, or was situational; whether civil legal relationship status should be decoupled from sacraments with the same name; whether there's a liberal or conservative conspiracy; whether the Church is about to collapse and whose fault that is. The room is full of people, getting red in the face, either crying or shouting or fuming or plugging their ears. The room is full of people, and it is filling up with smoke.
This is not Christianity, this room. This is like Christianity. This is similar to the experience of being a Christian. But this is not what it means to follow Christ. Christ enters in silence, holding a flower, waiting for peace to return in his wake.
The Church has and will survive change, and what we must hold close to us is that love is not hatred, and Christ is not hatred. I pray.
